Interview – Following Freud, Lacan and others: Reflecting on the aftermath of war, persecution, and torture

Presented by: Beatrice Patsalides-Hofmann, PhD

A conversation between two psychoanalysts, Beatrice Patsalides Hofmann and Garrett Tanner, members of the Lacanian School of Psychoanalysis, will focus on clinical and theoretical questions arising from the practice of psychoanalysis in the context of war. Topics of discussion will include the particularity of trauma involving the effects of political violence, captivity, and torture, the ways psychoanalysis has addressed the psychoanalytic treatment of persons afflicted by war and captivity, and the specific ways Dr. Patsalides has been intervening as a trainer and consultant for a psychiatric team in Lviv/Ukraine in the current war instigated by Russia. A Q&A period will allow for dialogue with the audience.

Meet the Presenter

Beatrice Patsalides-Hofmann, PhD

Beatrice Patsalides Hofmann, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst based in Paris, France. She is Vice-President of the Lacanian School of Psychoanalysis and serves as clinical consultant at the Primo Levi Center in Paris, France, and as clinical consultant to the Department of Psychiatry at Unbroken Hospital in Lviv, Ukraine. Her current work includes training and consultation for psychiatric teams responding to the mental health impacts of armed conflict. Her publications and clinical work focus on trauma, political violence, and psychoanalytic approaches to treating individuals affected by persecution and warfare.

This program, when attended in its entirety, is eligible for 1.5 continuing education credits. Austin Psychoanalytic will provide certificates of attendance to participants who attend the program in full. Austin Psychoanalytic’s continuing education programs are sponsored through Division 39’s APA-approved continuing education program. It is the responsibility of each licensee to verify that a given program meets the continuing education requirements for their specific license. Participants outside of Texas should consult their own licensing boards regarding CE eligibility.
